Don’t Mess With Duncan
After 19 season as the San Antonio Spurs forward that lead the NBA team to 5 Championship titles, Tim Duncan announced his retirement last Monday July 11. The news sent Spurs fans into a frenzy as his departure marks the end of an era for the beloved team as well as the NBA. Fans reacted to the loss of their icon vocally – hoping for a Duncan press conference to bid them a final farewell, and online with Twitter posts creating the trending hashtag #ThankYouTD.
However one local business turned the Tim Duncan hype into a marketing strategy which has resulted in a lawsuit filed by the NBA star. Photographer Sarah Brooke Lyons photographed Duncan for her 1005 Faces project in 2015; Her project was displayed in art galleries last year including at the Carver Community Cultural Center in San Antonio as a “way to explore our cultural diversity and recognize how our individual identities create a collective consciousness.” Her art show included a photograph of Tim Duncan holding up a sing reading “Good, Better Best. Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is your best!”.
Robert Edler Real Estate Group superimposed his logo over this sign resulting in a lawsuit filed by Tim Duncan on Friday July 15 against Edler and Keller Williams. “Duncan alleges that was a misappropriation of his name and image because he didn’t authorize it. He seeks unspecified financial damages.”
