DLG Luce – Austin – Texas Judge Strikes Down Voter ID Law
As recently reported by the Texas Tribune, less than two weeks before early voting begins in Texas, a federal judge in Corpus Christi ruled Texas’ voter ID law is unconstitutional. The ruling calls for state officials to drop the new requirements.
The Federal Judge held that “SB 14 creates an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote…and was imposed with an unconstitutional discriminatory purpose.” The Court also held that SB 14 constitutes an unconstitutional poll tax.
A representative from the office of Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is currently running for Governor, has stated that the state would immediately file an appeal to the US 5th Circuit of Appeals.
This is likely to be a quick developing matter given the impending midterm elections.
