As recently reported in the Austin Business Journal, SideCar has responded to a cease and desist order from the City of Austin that it plans to continues with plans to offer rides at South by Southwest. This, despite a city ordinance in Austin that will authorize impounding of cars offering unlicensed for hire rides.

SideCar has also forwarded correspondence from its lawyer. According to the article, SideCar argues that applying for-hire ride regulations to them would be a violation of a Federal law that protects operators of interactive computer services from state regulation based on their users communications.
