As recently reported in the Atlantic Wire, a Virginia Judge has ruled that ‘liking’ something on Facebook is not protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. 

Six people sued a Sheriff in Virginia after they were fired for supporting his opponent on Facebook by ‘liking’ his page. The Virginia Judge acknowledged that other cases involving messages on Facebook have resulted in a different outcome, but clicking ‘like’ on Facebook is different and doesn’t warrant protection. 

A defense lawyer for the defense has indicated that they will seek an appeal.
