DLG Luce – Austin – Federal Court Strikes Down Texas Redistricting and Voter ID in Same Week
As recently reported in the Austin American Statesman, three Federal Judges’ ruled last Thursday that Texas’ Voter ID law, if allowed to take effect, would discriminate against minority voters. The Court ruled that the law ‘imposes strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor, and racial minorities in Texas are disproportionately likely to live in poverty.’
Two days earlier, a three judge panel of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia ruled in a unanimous ruling that Texas’ redistricting maps discriminated against minority voters.
As noted by the editorial board of the Austin American Statesman, ‘thus judges on the same federal court – Republican as well as Democratic appointees – ruled that on both redistricting and voter ID, Texas Legislature passed laws that discrimnated against minority voters.
The State of Texas has indicated that it will appeal Thursday’s ruling to the United States Supreme Court.
