DLG Luce – Austin – Farmers Insurance to Pay $84.4 Million For Overcharging Consumers

In an Order of Preliminary Approval filed with the Travis County District Clerk’s office in Austin, The Austin Business Journal has reported that Los Angeles based Farmers Insurance has agreed to return $84.4 million to policy holders in a settlement reached with the Texas Attorney General’s office and the Texas Department of Insurance.

The lawsuit against Farmers was originally filed in 2002 by the Texas Attorney General’s Office, alleging violations of the Texas Deceptive Practices Act. According to State investigators cited in the article, Farmers had consumers paying excessive amounts for premiums while having their coverage reduced without their knowledge.
