DLG Luce – Austin – Bond to Fund New Austin Courthouse Narrowly Defeated

As recently reported by the Austin American Statesman and multiple local media outlets, a proposed $287 million bond to fund a new civil courthouse in downtown Austin was narrowly defeated by just over 1,000 votes in last night’s election.

More than 73,000 votes were cast, but at the end of the day Travis County voters rejected the proposed bond by a margin of less than 2%.

The defeat of the bond results in a certain delay to fund and build a new civil courthouse in the Austin area, which is desperate needed. Currently the Travis County civil courthouse is a building that was built in 1931 when the county only had 75,000 residents. The Courthouse was last expanded in 1964 and is in desperate needs of major improvements.

While a new courthouse won’t break ground as soon as many had hoped for, many Austin leaders continue the push to fund and build a new facility the community so desperate needs in this rapidly growing city.
