The Austin American Statesman recently published an interesting article focusing on the role of Court Reporters in Texas Civil and Criminal Courts. The article discusses the importance of court reporters in Texas trials, but also discussed whether or not in some cases they are unnecessary, or whether more inexpensive alternatives to their costly transcripts are available. 

The article also discusses how there have been some cases where the lack of a record, caused by a subpar court reporter has caused problems, including in at least one case the lawyer’s inability to file an appeal for a couple of years following trial.
