As recently reported in the Austin American Statesman, Federal Judge Samuel Cummings dismissed a challenge to a 32 year old federal law that bars the sale of handguns by licensed dealers to people under the age of 21.
Specifically, the ruling noted that the Court is of the opinion that the ban does not run afoul of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Furthermore, the opinion noted that the right to bear arms is enjoyed only by those not disqualified from the exercise of the Second Amendment.
Notably, the Judge noted in his opinion that it is within the purview of Congress, and not the Courts, to weigh the relative policy considerations regarding the age of gun owners. To learn more, read the article on the Austin American Statesman.
